The Catch of the Day

One of things I enjoy most about Phuket is seeing the brightly coloured fishing boats setting out to sea on their nightly fishing trip.  Some nights, when the sea is calm, there are hundreds of coloured lights flickering on the horizon.

As morning arrives there’s a hustle and bustle on the shoreline as the boats land their catches, fresh fish brimming from their boats – fishermen’s wives eagerly display the catch on rickety trestle tables; red and white snapper, barracuda, tuna, king prawns, mackerel, and many other types which I cannot name.  Local restaurateurs carefully inspect the days catch and buy kilos to sell to hungry customers at their beachside restaurants and local bars.

This colourful event is a daily occurrence on Bangtao Beach on the west coast of Phuket, and fresh fish is one of the delicious advantages of life on this tropical island.  A handful of lucky people, living in beachfront apartments, witness this scene everyday and you can bet they are first in line when the catch is brought in.

One lucky owner, Paul, explained to me what made beachfront so special.  “I bought this place because it has great views towards Trisara and the big sweeping bay at Bangtao, it’s also fantastic to have the beach right on your doorstep.”

This small development of sixteen apartments and three penthouses is set back just 50 metres from the beach.  The design is distinctively modern with the use of coloured glass and local marble featuring in the interior and exteriors decoration.

Paul’s third floor apartment, one below the penthouse, is light and airy and with an interior of 148 m2 it is one of the largest at the beachfront development.  It also has great views of the ocean from the floor to ceiling windows in the living room and master bedroom.

The living, dining and kitchen areas are open plan and furnished with light woods and natural-coloured materials, which are accentuated by the colourful local artworks that Paul has chosen.

The master bedroom suite has a spacious balcony with a fully tiled Jacuzzi, it is perfectly screened and ideal for romantic evenings.  The guest room located at the rear of the apartment is also en-suite with a shower and wash basin as well as closet.

The apartment is reached by elevator directly from the underground car park and has access to excellent facilities; a long lap pool, landscaped gardens and poolside bar and restaurant – serving fresh fish of course!

This beachfront apartment is right beside the beach, but is also convenient for many beachside bars and restaurants, shops and dive centres.  It is also just a five minute walk from the more upmarket beach clubs on Surin Beach and a twenty minute drive from Phuket International Airport.

New environmental restrictions coming into force in Phuket will mean opportunities to buy in similar beachfront developments will become very limited.  Paul’s apartment is on the market for 33m Baht and at this price it must be the catch of the day!
